TLD Calculator

Analyze revenue projections, break-even analysis, and growth modeling for public TLDs with comprehensive financial modeling

What are .Generic TLDs

.Generic TLDs are open top-level domains that anyone can register without special requirements or qualifications. These encompass established extensions like .com, .org, and .net, alongside modern options such as .app, .shop, and .tech. While most generic TLDs are unrestricted, some may optionally implement niche-specific, geographic, or other eligibility requirements. This flexibility allows registry operators to choose whether their TLD remains fully open or targets specific registrant communities.

Operations Model

Generic TLD registries partner with accredited registrars (like GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) who sell domains on your TLD extension to their customers. When an end user registers any domain, whether a regular domain or a premium domain, the registrar collects the payment and then pays the registry the wholesale price for that domain. This wholesale price (regular or premium) represents the registry's revenue. The registry and its partner providers operate the technical infrastructure while registrars handle all customer-facing sales and support.

Cost Structure

Standard .Generic TLD application costs and ongoing registry operational fees

Application/Delegation Costs

From $379,000

Includes ICANN application fee; paid as per payment schedule

Ongoing Annual Costs

From $88,800

Includes $25,800 ICANN registry fee; applies ~2% annual increase over projection term

Controls growth timing separately for regular and premium domains with independent transition periods and rates. Each domain type transitions from its starting rate to its mature rate. Note: When enabled, this overrides the growth rates from the Projections & Pricing section.

years

Years for regular domains to transition from starting growth rate to mature growth rate. Gradual progression toward target rate for regular domains only.

years

Years for premium domains to transition from starting growth rate to mature growth rate. Gradual progression toward target rate for premium domains only.

%

Regular Domain Calculations

Year 1 Registrations: Base input value (default: 6,000)
Year N Registrations: Year(N-1) × (1 + Growth Rate)
Year N Renewals: Year(N-1) × Renewal Rate
Total Year N: Registrations + Renewals
Example: Year 2 = 7,800 reg + 3,900 renewals = 11,700 domains

Premium Domain Calculations

Base Premium Domains: Σ (Tier₁ + Tier₂ + ... + Tier₆)
Year N Premium Revenue: Σ (Tier × Price × Growthⁿ) × Strategy
Growth Application: Base × (1 + Premium Growth Rate)^(Year-1)
Example: Year 2 revenue = $76,800 × 1.20 = $92,160

Revenue Calculation Formula

Regular Revenue: (Registrations + Renewals) × Wholesale Price × Strategy
Premium Revenue: Tier-based calculations with growth and strategy
Total Revenue: Regular + Premium
Year 1 Total: $75,000 (regular) + $76,800 (premium) = $151,800

Advanced Settings

Time-Based Growth Modeling

Time to Maturity: Years to transition from initial to mature growth rate (default: 5)
Transition Phase: Growth rates gradually progress from initial rate to mature rate
Mature Growth Rate: Target growth rate that replaces initial rates after transition

Cumulative Decay: Retention Factor^(Years since maturity)
15% Decay: Growth reduces by 15% annually after Year 5
calculate

Core Financial Calculations

Net Profit

Formula: Total Revenue - Total Costs
Components: Revenue - (Amortization + Operations + Marketing + Annual)
Year 1: $151,800 - $254,600 = -$102,800 (initial loss)

Cumulative Profit

Formula: Σ (Net Profit₁ + Net Profit₂ + ... + Net Profitₙ)
Break-even: First year where cumulative profit > 0
Year 3: -$102,800 + $56,821 + $131,751 = $85,772 (break-even)

Return on Investment (ROI)

ROI Formula: (Total Revenue ÷ Total Costs - 1) × 100
Investment Period: Years 1 through break-even year
Positive ROI: Revenue exceeds total costs
33.2% ROI: $867,396 revenue ÷ $651,250 costs - 1 = 33.2%

Cost Structure

Amortization: $379,000 ÷ Years (0 years = full cost Year 1)
Base Annual Costs: $88,800 (ICANN fee + operations)
Inflation: Base × 1.02^(Year-1)
Marketing: Strategy-based ($25K-$250K, Year 1 only)
Operations: $40,000 annually
Year 1 Total: $379K + $88.8K + $50K + $40K = $557.8K

Comprehensive Note: All calculations incorporate strategy presets, growth modeling, and advanced settings. The calculator uses compound growth, accounts for market maturity phases, and provides real-time updates as you adjust parameters. Each setting interacts with others to create a complete TLD business model with accurate financial projections and break-even analysis.
